While the ink can affect life expectancy, a larger factor is the paper used. We do have lightfast ratings listed at the link below for Epson ink and paper. If using a 3rd party paper however, you would want to contact that manufacturer for a similar list.

Does Hi-Speed reduce print quality?

I assume it does but when I print two examples side by side I can not tell the difference. If their is a degradation in quality, by what % is it worse. Can someone please clear this up?

This setting turns on/off bi-directional print vs uni-directional printing. For uni-directional printing, this means the printer will print only when the carriage moves in one direction. With Bi-directional, there is print each time the carriage moves. This eliminates any distortion due to mis-alignment in the carraige. While this is more noticeable on much older models with lower dpi, it is very difficult to see with todays high dpi printers. If you do not see any difference with your prints, definitely leave it on, it should print 2 times faster.

My black positives do not come in even rich black. It's spotted. I'm using Kimoto Silkjet film.

My printer is less of 6 month old. I've tried different settings. Could it be the kind of film I'm using?

We use this printer for negatives and positives every day. Of course make sure your nozzle check is printing a perfect pattern, even if one nozzle is misfiring or missing your print will be spotted. Also we only use the GutenPrint driver for making film. If you use the GutenPrint driver you will have complete control over resolution and density. The Epson driver does not give you this control.

It is possible. You can test the printer by printing the same image on another type of media and checking to see if the black is spotted. Also please contact Kimoto, to verify this media is compatbile with your printer and they can provide what printer settings are recommended for best results with their product.

I don't use the Artisan 50, but I have the R280 and the 1430 and many other Epson Pro Printers. Im my opinion the 1400 & 1430 have the best printhead Epson makes. If 13" printing is big enough, the quality is amazing and better than any other printer Epson makes. And if you have the GutenPrint drivers and know how to fine tune them and you know how to make your own color profiles you can achieve much better quality than using the standard Epson profiles.

Hello, my name is Syd and I am with Epson America

The print on these image will be very similar as they all use similar ink. While the R280 is long discontinued, the Artisan 50 max size is 8.5" wide and the Artisan 1430 is 13" wide with wireless printing capabilities. Choosing which of these printers to purchase would more depend on these requirements rather than the very similar prints.

No, as per the printer, the Artisan 1430 will only accept the higher capacity 78 cartridges.

Print quality

In the specs. of my Artisan 1430 it states the max print resolution as 5760 x 1440 optimized dpi. However, when i print a photo on ultra glossy paper the best i get is 720 dpi. What am I doing wrong? That's even after I manually select the print quality.

There should be an option that says photo RPM. Please select this box along with the glossy photo paper type. 720dpi at best photo, usually means the paper type is set wrong in the driver.
