Hello, my name is Syd and I am with Epson America
This is a complex issue, however I will try to give a brief outline and cover the main points.
Buying a new fax is the same as buying a new phone. The phone does not know what number it is and will ring when someone calls your number. If you take the same phone and plug into a neighbor's phone jack, the phone will now ring when someone calls your neighbors number. A fax works the same way, and will ring when someone calls your home number and does not have a 'built in' number in the machine.
There are various methods you may use to receive faxes, one method is to have a seperate phone line installed for that fax. With this method, the fax will ring only when that number is called. Another popular more inexpensive method would be to have one phone line with 2 different numbers. This will have a different number and ring patterns for each phone number. Your phone and fax will ring for both incoming calls and faxes, however one phone number will give the traditional single ring pattern for a voice call, and the other number will give a double ring pattern to show this is a fax. The fax machine can be set to only answer one type of ring pattern so it should never answer a voice call.
An Epson rep can assist with more details or please see your local computer dealer if purchasing through them.
