How do I setup the parallel port to work with the scanner?
1) You need a high quality, shielded parallel port cable to attach the scanner.

If you're using Windows NT you need to use a SCSI interface. Windows NT does not support parallel scanners (not just Epson), virtual device drivers (VxDs), power management functions and some DOS and Windows 3.1 applications. The Microsoft web site has available information concerning compatibility issues.

The scanner requires a true bi-directional parallel interface and you can set your computer to use LPT1 or LPT2 (see the documentation provided with your computer). Check the computer's BIOS setup utility for an enabled bi-directional parallel port mode. If you're using Windows 95, you may need to obtain Microsoft's Service Pack #1 which includes an updated parallel port driver. Download The Win 95 Service Pack Upgrade #1 from Microsoft's website (http:// or upgrade to Windows 98.

Note: Most PC's come setup as a ECP or a EPP parallel port. These modes may not be compatible with scanners. Select PS/2 compatible or Standard or Bidirectional mode for the parallel port. Save the settings, exit and test the scanner on the parallel port. In the Twain setup (Control Panels Epson Scanner Setup applet), select :
Interface - Bi-Directional Port ID - 378 (for the existing parallel port or 278 for LPT2)

2) If you are running Windows 95 or 98, check the Windows Device Manager parallel port setting for the proper settings-- LPT 1, 378, IRQ . Disable any Print Spooler from the Control Panels Printer applet. If necessary, install a generic printer as the Default printer temporarily to avoid conflicts.

Also, if you use Windows 95/98, go to Control Panel and click-on System, then select Device Manager click on the LPT driver, select General and remove the X in the "Original Configuration" section and then restart Windows and test.

3) Check your win.ini file (in the Windows directory) with Wordpad. Look at the lines which display: LOAD= and RUN= . They load programs which can conflict with the parallel printer port. You can place a semi-colon and a space at the beginning of these lines to cause Windows to bypass them (e.g., ; LOAD= ).

4) Set another printer model as your Default printer -- install an Epson FX-80 for example. Restart the computer and test the scanner again. If necessary, test the scanner on another computer in the same manner.

5) The adapter card can only be set to IRQ 5 or 7 (which is the LPT 1 port) with a jumper on the board. Ensure that the jumper(s) are set on the adapter card properly - see the manual for details. If there is still a problem, the optional adapter card (if installed) may be conflicting with an internal sound card (or another peripheral possibly using IRQ 5). You could remove the sound card from its slot and test the scanner. Or, remove the adapter card and test the scanner on your existing parallel port -- LPT 1. If the sound card (or another device using IRQ 5) cannot be reset to another available IRQ (and operate properly), you'll have to leave the adapter card out of the computer and connect the scanner to your parallel printer port. The scanner and printer can share the port with the addition of a high quality A/B switch connected with short cables.
