Q:
Why does the C82 print output look different than my other Epson Color printer?
A:
The C82 uses a new pigmented ink technology called "DuraBrite". DuraBrite color ink pigments are encapsulated in a resin polymer which gives them their long lasting and water resistant properties. The black ink is not encapsulated and therefore composite black is used when Glossy paper is selected.

You may notice darker tones as a result of the different ink type. The majority of printers use a dye based ink, which is slightly lighter than a pigment based ink. The advantage of DuraBrite ink is that is has increased archival capabilities; such that it will last up to 70 years on a matte heavy weight paper. The colors produced by DuraBrite inks may look slightly different than those produced by dye-based ink. Due to the nature of pigment inks, lighting conditions can affect the appearance of printer output. For example, a print viewed in daylight may appear to have a slightly different color balance when viewed under tungsten lighting. Your printer software was designed to represent color accurately when prints are illuminated with a D50 (daylight) light source.

Because of the nature of pigment inks, the degree of gloss may be uneven on glossy photo papers. Surface gloss decreases with greater pigment saturation. The C82 excels at printing photos on plain and uncoated paper whereas other inks are designed for coated ink jet paper.

For high quality printouts and for long lasting images such as photos, it is important to use paper which has been designed to be most compatible to the new DuraBrite pigmented ink formula. EPSON Matte Photo Paper and EPSON Premium Semigloss Photo Paper, have been developed to produce the highest quality output with DuraBrite inks.

Other brands of paper, which claim they can be used with all brands of ink jet printers, may not be compatible with the DuraBrite inks, just as some are not compatible with EPSON dye based inks. These papers may give you lower quality color images and will not have the longevity of EPSON's long lasting media. The ink may also not dry properly, because the ink doesn't bind properly to the media, causing smearing and pages sticking together.

Coated ink jet paper that you may have been using with a dye based ink jet printer may not provide the same print quality with pigmented inks. Epson Photo Quality Paper, Epson Photo Quality Glossy Paper, Photo Greeting Cards and Epson Photo Quality Glossy Film and other coated papers are not recommended for highest quality printing due to the pigmented inks used in this printer.

For best results, use the following settings in the print driver menu:
1. Enable PhotoEnhance 4.
2. Set the driver to use Digital Camera Correction.
3. Set the Tone of the image to Hard.
