Replacing an Old Ink Cartridge

In some circumstances you may need to replace an ink cartridge before it is empty. For example, if the quality of your printouts remains poor even after repeatedly cleaning the print head, one or both of the ink cartridges may be old or damaged and should be replaced.

To replace an ink cartridge before the black or color ink out light flashes, follow these steps.

If the black or color ink out light is flashing or is on, replace the empty ink cartridge as described in Replacing a Low or Empty Ink Cartridges.

Caution:
Once you remove an ink cartridge, it becomes unusable and cannot be reinstalled even if ink remains.
Leave the old cartridge installed in the printer until you are ready to replace it with a new one.
Make sure the printer is on. The power light should be on, but not flashing.
Lower the output tray, then open the printer cover.
Hold down the load/eject button for three seconds. The print head moves left to the replacement position, and the power light begins flashing.

Caution:
Do not move the print head by hand as this may damage the printer. Always use the load/eject button to move it.
Lift up the appropriate ink cartridge clamp. Then lift the ink cartridge out of the printer and dispose of it properly.
Remove the yellow tape seal from the new cartridge.
Place the cartridge gently into the cartridge holder. Do not press down on the cartridge. Then press the ink cartridge clamp down until it locks in place.

Warning:
If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water.
Caution:
Once you install the cartridges, do not open their clamps again until you replace the ink cartridges. Otherwise, the cartridges may become unusable.
Press the load/eject button. The printer moves the print head back to its home position and charges ink in the system. This process takes between one and two minutes to complete.

Caution:
The power light continues to flash while the printer performs the ink charging operation. Never turn off the printer while the power light is flashing. Doing so can result in incomplete charging of ink.
Close the printer cover.
